Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter

Apple 20W USB-C Charger in the UAE: Who Needs It and How to Get an Original

Which iPhones and iPads the Apple 20W USB-C adapter suits, when to step up to 40W, which cable you need, and quick signs of a fake.

The Apple 20W USB-C Power Adapter is the charger most iPhone owners in the UAE end up needing, because new iPhones ship with a cable but no adapter in the box. This short guide covers who it suits, which cable to pair it with, when the newer 40W is worth it, and how to avoid a copy. For the full teardown of a fake (including our Malayalam video), read our main guide: Original vs Fake Apple Charger in the UAE.

Which devices is the 20W adapter for?

  • iPhone 8 and later – these support USB-C Power Delivery fast charging, so 20W can take a near-empty battery to around 50% in roughly half an hour (Apple’s own figure, with a USB-C cable).
  • iPhone 15, 16 and 17 series – they use USB-C on the phone itself, so one USB-C to USB-C cable works.
  • iPad and AirPods – the 20W adapter charges them safely; the device only draws what it needs.

Older iPhones with Lightning need a USB-C to Lightning cable. The old USB-A cable will not fit the 20W adapter’s USB-C port.

20W or 40W?

For most people 20W is enough – it is compact, cool-running, and fast for overnight or top-up charging. Consider the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter if you have a recent iPhone that supports higher wattage, or you want one adapter that also charges an iPad quickly. A bigger adapter never “forces” extra power into a phone; the phone negotiates what it can accept.

Quick signs you are looking at a copy

  • A price that looks too good for an Apple-branded adapter, or a seller who cannot say where stock comes from.
  • Loose or uneven seams, glue marks, rough plastic, or fuzzy printing on the adapter body.
  • Missing or misspelled safety text and voltage rating (genuine Apple adapters list 100–240V input).
  • Gets unusually hot, buzzes, or charges inconsistently.

Be careful: weight and the Apple logo are not reliable tests. The fake we opened had clay and metal inside to match the weight, and the logo looked identical. That is why buying from a trusted seller matters more than any single visual check – details in our fake vs original guide.

Looking after your charger

Keep it out of direct sun in the car, avoid charging under pillows, and replace any adapter or cable that is cracked or frayed. In UAE summer heat, a quality charger that manages temperature properly protects your battery over the long run.
